Lets face it…it has always been – and probably always will be – the American Dream to own a nice home. How do I know this? Every year – for 15 years – I would ask my senior economic students (in high school) to raise their hand if it was their goal to own a home someday…and every year everybody in the classroom would raise their hand.
Some may find this interesting because in the media you will often times see headlines such as “People less convinced on home ownership these days” or “Fewer Americans willing to buy a home”. Whereas there might be an element of truth to these sentiments I think the real issue is that the dynamics to home ownership have changed…not the fact that people want to own a home. For example, it is harder for young people to buy a home these days…that is a fact. Young people have more student loan and other debt these days making it harder to save for a down payment. And it doesn’t help that home prices have gone up so quickly in recent years. These are not the best dynamics to owning a home but, again, it does not defeat the idea that people eventually want to buy a home.
With all this said, if you want to buy home it is important that you know what it takes to buy a home and work hard to get there. As a loan officer I’d like to give you some important tips…1) Try your hardest to pay your bills on time and keep our credit clean. 720 or higher is the ideal credit score but if your credit is lower than that – like many people’s are – you can still obtain a home loan depending on what your score ie. 2) Try to save money…one of the biggest impediments to buying a home is not having the down payment money. However, also note that there are great loans that require very little down whether it be a 5% down conventional loan or a 3.5% down FHA loan or a 0% down USDA or VA loan…3) Work with a loan officer who is there to help you out.
